And there are two fundamentally different approaches to this that I wanna unpack, starting with Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, published in 1895.

Now, the irony of The Red Badge of Courage is one of the great stories of American literature

He wants a red badge of courage because he believes a physical scar is the only undeniable currency that will prove to the world, and to himself, that he did his duty

I read through that and that's something that stuck with me.

The Red Badge of Courage.

I still remember Stephen Crane.

And I still remember the scene where he comes across the soldier that's wounded, that's leaning against a tree that has a butthole here, his gun's to the side, he's almost dead, and he watches him die, and then he moves on.

But maybe it will.

Stephen Crane's novel, The Red Badge of Courage, is published to wide acclaim.

So that was

And he doesn't name science fiction novels.

He names The Red Badge of Courage.

He names Tolstoy.

And he names John Dos Passos, who is the great realist of the early 20th century.
