The Quarry

Andy says, I have, have you heard of Dark Pictures Anthology games? Joe, is one of those, is one of them called The Quarry? Andy, hmm, well, I'm not so, well, I'm not sure.

And then he, at the very bottom, he writes, Andy, you have heard of the Dark Pictures Anthology? So I guess the thing that most people...

That's being pointed out here is I'm assuming the quarry is the most famous of the Dark Pictures games.

It's definitely the most recent, but yeah, I didn't really look at the franchise beyond, like, back in the day, some streamers I watched... were playing the early Dark Pictures games.

So I knew of...

Little Hope was the first one I even heard of, was Little Hope, then Man of Medan, and then I heard there were two more after that.

I didn't follow the franchise long enough, or play them until now, enough to know that there was a thing later on called The Quarry.

And if you've never played them before or if you're nostalgic for them, I think that similarly, it can be like, it just, it feels nice for a nostalgic type experience like a sleepover.

The Dark Picture Anthology, y'all play any of those? Until Dawn, The Quarry, that kind of game.

Those are very actively built to be played in a group.

And so they're extraordinarily, first of all, a fun continuation of the horror trend, which I think is a thing that a lot of kids did in sleepovers.

I think I really love the fact that she picked up Until Dawn because even though that specific game was not, like, my inspiration, so Supermassive is, is the publisher of this game.

They actually did a different game called The Quarry, and The Quarry was a huge inspiration for this book, so she definitely understood the vibes I was going for, which meant a lot to me.

Right.

It shows that, like, she actually, she put thought into it.

First off, we have, uh, Dark Boss Man who says, "Episode 958.

Andrew, The Quarry," this is this Dark Pictures game, "is one of the better games that Supermassive have done, so do check it out.

Also, Until Dawn 2 is being created by a different studio," oh, "as Supermassive don't own the rights to that franchise.

Good old Sony got those rights way back when the first game was published." Well, that was their first mistake, giving anything to Sony these days.

They're not in anyone's good books.

Um, okay, that makes a bit more sense.

Yes, Joseph, um, asked if I had The Quarry last time around.

I guess I will.

Which this is this is the weird one where it's like, yes, this is the sequel to Until Dawn, you know, coming 12 years later.

But it's made by Firesprite Studio rather than Supermassive, who made Until Dawn and then went on to do The Dark Pictures and The Quarry, which I played like every one of them.

And I'm usually like pretty mid to bad.

But you know what? You got to respect that they are on their shtick and they are so committed to it.

And when I look at this, all I saw was cringe.

I'm not really an Until Dawn guy, but the game that this really reminded me of is The Quarry.

Yeah.

It felt more like that than an Until Dawn game.

like the ones, it's like realistic looking people in different situations.

Like I think one of them was, what was it called? The quarry

or something like that? The quarry.

I don't think I have that one.

If there is one that's called that.

Yeah, yeah,

Wasn't there one with werewolves? I thought that was the quarry.

There used to be a tradition that we had...

We had a tradition on this podcast where every Halloween, the spooky game, Matt and I would like get drunk at his apartment and play like one of the, like we'd play the quarry or like the devil in me.

Like we'd play until dawn.

And we streamed it.

We actually didn't finish that game because it was so bad.

The only two games from that developer that are playable even are...

Until Dawn and the Quarry.

I think the new one they're coming out with might be, but it's actually a different developer.

And there's a lot more to this than you might expect.

The Quarry, i.e. the other really good horror game, choice-based horror game from Supermassive, the dudes that did Until Dawn.

The Quarry is... exactly what you want if you loved Until Dawn.

You've got isometric camera angles.

You're exploring these different locations.

You'll probably do it in about two or three settings.

But yeah, really great performances, really good reveals.
