The Prestige

And I'm just sitting there waiting on Him, and I hear Jesus refer to the scripture that He talks about He had died, and the disciples are in a locked room, and all of a sudden Jesus appears in the room.

And so I'm sitting there, and He reminds me of that scripture, and He said, "You know how I got into that locked room?" I'm like, "Well, you were dead, so you were ghost-like, you know? All the ghost movies I've seen, you can walk through walls 'cause you don't have any substance." And He said, "No, I'm more real than the wall." I'm trying to get my head around it.

[laughs] And He said, "The Creator cannot have less substance than the creation." And He began to talk to me about the fact that if this realm is real, but it's created by a realm that has even more substance to it, and it just shifted my life because even though I'd been a Christian for a long time, this realm felt more real.

And praying and asking a God who was ghost-like to affect it didn't mean anything to me.

Art, how does it compare to the rest of Nolan's filmography for you?

Well, I just rewatched The Prestige.

That's a good-ass movie.

What the hell? It's so good.

People from 1926.

Hey, is The Prestige overrated? I love that movie.

No, not at all.

The Prestige is amazing.

I love that movie.

It's one of my favorite movies ever.

They're talking about how good it is or how it's not as good as like Troy or whatever.

My hot take is that the best Christopher Nolan movie of all time is The Prestige.

And it's not one that gets a lot of love.

They're actually re-releasing the Prestige, I'm so old, 20th anniversary in 2027 that that movie was made.

And they're re-releasing it in theaters in 2027 for the month of January.

So if you're a Prestige fan, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale.

And I think this is why it's so great that you're so into magic, like you said, like the tension in the release.

And one of my favorite Christopher Nolan movies is The Prestige.

Because I watch it every time and I'm like, every time I'm like, something's new.

Christopher Nolan really... messes with my head but charles and i've talked about how like we need to recapture the kind of like the catholic imagination in art in business like to inspire people to kind of just like see the world in the way that god sees the world and not in the in the ordered way and so um i think that's kind of what magic does right it kind of lowers everybody's uh kind of like tense tenseness if that's a word and like now attention thank you and i was not an english major and uh and uh kind of opens them up to like this whole different way of thinking of like maybe i don't know how everything works and like that's okay because like this was so exciting um And you mentioned earlier, you were going to, you want us to mention your first talk.

John, do you have a pick before your internet goes off?

I've got two picks Liz but they're sort of intertwined in the nature of a non-linear narrative such as one of the picks which is I'm going to pick The Prestige by Christopher Priest and The Recollections Tales from a Life or sorry Fragments from a Life in Writing by Christopher Priest.

So I had not read The Recollections because Priest discusses the difference between the book and the movie of The Prestige in one of the essays in the book and and I wanted to have read The Prestige before I read about his thoughts about the way it worked.

And I wanted to read the book because Christopher Priest is an incisive and strident commentator, but also very interesting and very good at writing.

The Prestige, the book, is great.

The Recollections, also great.

And I think, actually, it's really interesting because...
