Now, Hollywood had been attempting to create a screenplay around this story since it was first released in the mid-1930s, but due to the nature of the story and how risque it was for the times, of course, due to the adultery and the murder plot, it was almost impossible to get a working screenplay past the censors.

This one was written by Billy Wilder and also Raymond Chandler and it's based on a novel by James M. Cain, who also wrote The Postman Always Rings Twice, which also, of course, was made into a movie.

And as we mentioned, this was directed by Billy Wilder, whose other major credits were Some Like It Hot, The Seven Year Itch, Sunset Boulevard.

So he had a decent career there.

This raises an important question about how we consume these stories today.

Reading Chandler or James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice or Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon is essential.
