Jack RabidHOST
36:36
Um, our friend out in France hadn't made an album in four years since Wish That I Could See, which I thought was incredible.
Jack RabidHOST
36:45
And production is split not only between Travis Harrison, who like Doug Gillard is obviously connected to Guided by Voices, he's kinda like the sixth member/producer, engineer of the guy, but also, uh, John Auer himself from The Poseys and, uh, a great solo artist in his own right, and these days playing with the Big Star Tribute Band that tours the country with Big Star's drummer, Jody Stephens, on drums and some vocals.
Jack RabidHOST
37:16
Now, that song apparently it was written for the frontman's daughter, Suzanne, so that sounds like one of those awe moments, and good for him.
Jack RabidHOST
37:25
Whereas Dave Myhr is also ...
Paul HinesHOST
32:15
So he's right there in that wheelhouse.
Christopher GreyHOST
32:17
And Ken Stringfellow from the Posies was tapped to handle lead vocals on this project as well.
Paul HinesHOST
32:22
Yeah, so they're basically a little mini super group, yeah? For sure, yep.
Paul HinesHOST
32:27
This is so well executed.
GregHOST
51:01
I always look forward to it.
GregHOST
51:03

Got a lot of plans I lost a lot of sleep Trying to understand
Brett VargoHOST
51:39
I knew you were going to pick that.
MattHOST

Yola Tengo I could go on and on really all citing them as a major influence but if you're not familiar with them that's probably due to the fact that they were never a commercial success that was due in most part to record label disputes which prevented their albums from being distributed on their initial release so on release their first album only sold 10,000 copies and and their second album also massively underperformed i think it's sold about 20 000 copies which is ridiculous for a record which sits at number 359 on rolling stone's 500 greatest albums of all time but they were very unfortunate in that regard they released four studio albums only two of them were released while they were a going concern during their original run in the 70s a further one was released a few years after their breakup and a fourth arrived in 2005 which will talk about shortly founding member chris bell left between the first and second albums he is on the first album again we'll talk about that later but they continued on as a three-piece until they broke up.
MattHOST
3:04
And then they reformed in the 90s with John Auer and Ken Stringfellow from the Posies on guitar and bass, respectively, and continued on until Alex Chilton's death.
MattHOST
3:16
I adore Big Star.
MattHOST
3:17
I have done since I was a teenager.
MattHOST
3:44
So we, yeah, have hopefully a shared appreciation of them.
MattHOST
3:48
I feel like I dragged you along to that to some extent, but I think you enjoyed that show, right? It had members of Yola Tango.
MattHOST
3:55
It had the guys from the Posies, Mike Mills from R.E.M., ray davies from the kinks lots of very established musicians coming together to play big star's third album in its entirety a great show for me but yeah interested to know what you think about them more broadly
WillHOST
4:12
Yeah, well, I do remember that show, but I was quite young at the time.
Brendan WebbGUEST
48:45
Roll them off.
Brendan WebbGUEST
48:46
Yeah, we played with the Posies at the Metro in Sydney.
Brendan WebbGUEST
48:53
And who else? We've played with Swerve Driver.
Brendan WebbGUEST
48:59
We did a couple of supports with Boss Hogg, John Spencer's side project, which was a bit of a strange gig for us to have.
JerryHOST
22:50
Another tidbit about the cover, the one and only King Strang- Stringfellow.
JerryHOST
22:54
Stringfellow? Yeah, of The Posies, provides some backing vocals to the voices of Lulu and Kim of The Fastbacks.
JerryHOST
23:02
Up next, some drama rama.

23:13
I scream at you for sharing.
Chuck KlostermanGUEST
50:13
Mm-hmm.
Chris RyanHOST
50:13
You know, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, The Posies, you know, what- you know, like, the, you know, if Lucinda Williams or Gillian Welch would be as big as Madonna.
Chris RyanHOST
50:21
Like they were just, there was a lot of, um, effort put towards that.
Chris RyanHOST
50:26
And I think in some ways, like that kind of thinking probably a- like ushered in, it was among the reasons that poptimism got ushered in, like was like-
Jonathan PretusGUEST
20:08
And then I guess two years after that, they were going to do the show again, but they wanted to have me just be like the main vocalist for the majority of it.
Jonathan PretusGUEST
20:18
Except for John Auer from the Posies was going to be there as well because it was at this festival and he was going to play an acoustic set.
Jonathan PretusGUEST
20:27
So John and I got to sing a bunch of stuff together.
Jonathan PretusGUEST
20:30
We did a really... like, you know, in real time, I got kind of goosebumps while we were singing, uh, you and your sister and, uh, and I am the cosmos.
