The Photographers' Gallery

Hello.

Welcome to a special collaboration show, um, here on Voices with The Photographers' Gallery in London.

Uh, I'm bringing a special show to you today.

Uh, my name is Yusra Manley Huff and I deal with the digital editorial over at The Photographers' Gallery, and I'm also a resident here on Voices Radio.

So this is kind of a collision of worlds for me.

Um, I'm here to introduce you to the wonderful color works of Sanlé Sory, who is a photographer from Burkina Faso.

Um, it is a moment where inhabitants of Bobo want to be pictured as global citizens.

Color photography proposes a self-fashioning, a self-understanding, and a self-representation of people of Burkina Faso.

In fact, the first, my, my f- first book on my list was from a charity shop.

Um, the, uh, the Photographers' Gallery is a great, um, place for, uh, photo books.

Um, and you know, if you, uh, need some film while you're out and about in London, it's usually good.

Yeah.

But, uh, Photographers' Gallery in London has got loads of great books.

It...

You could, oh, yeah, if you've got the money, you could spend a fortune in there on, uh...

Yeah.

So we both went to see that exhibition of photos of it at the Photographer's Gallery a few years ago.

We were talking about it and like, that's beautiful.

And it was part of the new left review, a kind of let's make this an actual space.

I have a thing called creativecorners.uk if, is the website if you're interested, creativecorners.uk. And what I do is gather in books from some incredibly generous people, photo- photography books, from photographers or galleries like The Photographers' Gallery, incredibly generous, um, or Satanta Books, say, or BJP Magazine, all of whom have been incredibly interesting.

But I get a lot of, um, nice people contacting me and donating photo books, which I then gather up When I've got enough and give them to, uh, state school photography departments.
