The Perfect Neighbor

Gita Ganabir.

And she directed The Perfect Neighbor.

And she talked about how that film basically came out of that same instinct where they were trying to help the family who was caught in this terrible situation and this personal crisis.

And they went down there to be of service.

I thought it was such an amazing documentary.

And I still predicted The Perfect Neighbor.

I don't know what I was thinking.

It makes so much sense now.

And those are all categories that the Academy voters statistically have been resistant to in recent years.

I don't know that Perfect Neighbor lost for that reason or not.

It actually wasn't a true crime movie, but Netflix packaged it that way as a Trojan horse to get people in the door.

And that may have I mean, it could have been the Netflix being, you know, resistance to Netflix of it all.

There are more cameras, there's more footage available today than there ever has been in history.

And as a result, last year we got something amazing like The Perfect Neighbor, which won our Critics Group Award for Best Documentary, which is nothing but police, um, police, uh, body cam footage telling, telling the story of, of an insane situation that happened in one neighborhood.

And it was in Alabama.

I think it's in Alabama, wherever it is.

I don't

know that that necessarily is like raising the bar, having like more people being able to like, like, like it is easier to make this stuff.

And even then, like, I like the per well, it feels weird to say I liked the perfect neighbor.

Cause that was kind of a depressing thing to watch, but, Incredibly disturbing film.

I think one one interesting example of that that you mentioned also in your article was Greta.

Is it Ganbar who did The Perfect Neighbor? Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

So there was, yeah, the, the SNL movie Saturday night.

But I mean, there was some good, the perfect neighbor on Netflix was a great doc that I watch.

It's true crime.

Yeah.
