The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show

Conferences really weren't for everyone, especially someone as introverted as me.

So why was I spending my limited social battery on these people? My friend Jill had invited me to go trick-or-treating with her and her kids, who were dressing up as Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm from The Flintstones.

I urgently wished I was there, holding hands with six-year-old Cleo, who would have shared her candy with me afterwards.

Cleo loved chocolate with a feverish intensity.

Uh, less theatrically oriented audiences will probably know her best these days from her role on Abbott Elementary, for which she won an Emmy.

The casting of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm emerged from a casting call in February of 1993.

Uh, due to the young age of the characters, and of course the labor laws that protect young actors, only identical twins between the ages of three and five were considered by casting director Nancy Mayer, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times reporting on this event.

The article has a few pictures of the hopeful auditioners, and luckily enough, they ran with one of Melanie and Elaine Silver, who ended up getting the role of Pebbles.

A- And of course, young audience members like to see people like themselves on screen.

Representation matters.

That said, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm really exist in this movie, uh, for completion's sake, uh, and also later on to serve as a plot device.

And rounding out the Rubble family, of course, is Rosie O'Donnell as Betty Rubble, uh, which was considered an unconventional choice, uh, then and now.
