is tracing the interconnected lives of three gay men across three pivotal eras yes yes yes 1932 yes 1937 yes 2017 yes oh yeah perfect in my brain this is going to be In the other two in the final season there is a episode where they're all basically going to some version of a play that is obviously based on Angels in America and there will be an intermission and then they'll keep being like there's more play.

Yeah.

And there's a really really funny scene where they're fighting and Lucas Gage is there playing himself as Lucas Gage trying to be like an ally.

and they go i'm sure it's important context they're trying to tell it's such it's one of my favorite tv of

all time um

and this is giving r.i.p the other two this is giving uh the play that they're all seeing the other two but like i'm seated for it yeah i'm like it's gonna be you think that the lie the interconnected lives of three gay men in the 1930s and 1940s and 2017 are gonna be it's gonna be a happy happy fun time absolutely not but i'm gonna be i'm gonna be seated for it

I always think of that HB- there's an HBO show called The Other Two, which I love, with Molly Shannon, and-

... overachievers, so.

But they are the other two.

I was doing a show called The Other Two, and we were shooting the second season of it in New York, and then the whole virus thing happened, so...

We'll get back to shooting that soon, hopefully.

So that'll come out and that's going to HBO Max.

when the entire show is that, I don't know if it hits.

Well, I think about the show The Other Two, which is a phenomenal show that seemingly no one ever watched, but it is so good, and it came out in, I wanna say, like, early 2020s.

And, um, it...

The, the premise of the show was that it was, like, a child becomes, like, an overnight, like, child star, like a Justin Bieber type, and his two...

no, it was a really good show.

It was around the same time that a bunch of shows like that were coming out, too, because that was around the same time as The Other Two.

Is that what that show was called? Yeah.

Yeah,

and I think I liked The Other Two more than Hacks, personally.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Pilots from two just incredible writers, Allison Silverman and, of Russian Doll, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and co-creator of the Colbert Report, and Portlandia, and everything.

And then one from Chris Kelly, former head writer of SNL, co-creator of the other two.

Putting together a great cast for these.

There's gonna be a great cast for the show in LA on the 13th.

Like, I don't know that there are many, like, TV characters that I've, like, kind of, like, really, like, fall in love with and come to embrace it's like, oh, these are like classic TV characters in these like eight episode seasons, as opposed to, you know, like the Beauty and the Beast or the Cheers or the whatever, where you like really like live with these people for like long stretches of time.

So like, I've been actually in general going back to a lot of like old TV shows with lots of runs that I've never seen.

Cause I'm like, I'm missing that a little bit, that flavor of television.

And this particular series, what do you think it is that's hooking you? Is it charming? Is it funny? Is it kitschy? How much of your love for it is genuine? And how much is ironic?

There can be a joy in this sort of, well, this is what we got

today.

It's also why I like talk shows if you enjoy those things.

I do.

Sam Schlies understands these illusions better than most.

She's a TV producer working on shows like Broad City and The Other Two.

She's also the head of comedy at South by Southwest.

And one day, in between jobs, she books herself a solo flight from LA to Thailand, and then, while she's sitting on a beach halfway across the world, she watches the city she left behind disappear.

She's the co-creator of Schmigadoon! I mean, I could go on and on.
