Like the old man, the rich old man, whose character name is The Old Man, does get a big backstory to explain some of why he's so awful.

Even though it explains it or narrativizes it, it doesn't excuse it in any way.

In no way.

Because, of course, most of the time they refer to him not just as the old man, but as the old lech.

And his own sons are like, oh, you caught that, did you? It's like, hell yeah, I did.

You got to be joking, kidding me.

Because the genre rarely confronts the reality of aging.

The whole concept of a thriller usually relies on physical invulnerability, but FX's The Old Man forces the genre to look in the mirror
