Occasionally, we'd rent a Super Nintendo or I think one of the first Sega ones.

I'd rent the Noid game.

They had the Domino's Pizza Noid character.

They had him in video game form.

The thing caught fire.

The Noid landed on t-shirts and lunch boxes, and even headlined in his own video game, though to be fair, it was just a reskin of a Japanese game about a ninja.

For a few years in the late 80s, Avoid the Noid was the kind of slogan that everyone knew, and it all seemed like harmless fun.

Enter Kenny Noid, who was 22 and living in the Atlanta area.

By the accounts of the people who knew him, he'd struggled with mental health for some time, and the commercials had gotten under his skin in a way his family found hard to explain.

He was eventually released from psychiatric custody and unfortunately this wasn't to be his second chance at a normal life in 1995 some six years after the afternoon that briefly made him national news he closed the curtains on himself at his home in tallahassee Florida.

For Domino's, the timing of all this was a nightmare, because the standoff happened while the Noid was at the absolute peak of his fame.

The headlines almost wrote themselves, and the papers couldn't resist the obvious line that this time the hostages hadn't managed to avoid the Noid.
