The Night Comes for Us

I wouldn't say it reaches quite the levels of The Night Comes for Us, but nothing really does.

[laughs]

But I think most of the movie is not super violent until towards the, the climax of the movie-

You should go watch it.

Mm.

But even just mentioning the Raid and, you know, even The Night Comes for Us, I think what this movie might lack for me, as snobbish as this sound, it is partly the filmmaking aspect of it-

Like, take a horror comedy with a ton of blood and a high body count that doesn't have the tone and aesthetic of a horror movie, yet nobody's going, "Ah, you know, that's not horror." We, we just kinda put it in the horror camp just like you do when you see those no-budget slashers that are released direct to Prime that don't have a single onscreen kill nor a drop of blood in them.

We just go, "Ah, it's horror." Uh, but then you take a film like, say, The Night Comes for Us 2018, and it's one of my favorite action movies in the l- you know, the last 20 years and no person in their right mind would call this horror by any stretch, and yet it has more blood and gore and a higher body count than probably any horror movie you can name.

Mm-hmm.

And so you know, like, you know, Jay and Kyle, you've both argued very well that No Escape 2015's a horror movie, and I can find nothing wrong with your assessment of that film, yet when I saw it, and Jay this is before you were championing it, uh, over on HMP, it had never crossed my mind that I was watching a horror movie.

It's not like a typical Indonesian movie because, you know, most films here, so maybe, like, 20 years ago, um, Indonesian action films were very popular.

You've seen films like The Raid or The Night Comes For Us.

And recently, maybe over the past five to 10, it's been more dominated by horror films and dramas.

So it's kind of a fresh film just because very few genres like action are attempted nowadays in Indonesia.

But when I finally got to see it without a trailer or any spoilers going into it, I was just completely blown away.

If you like films like The Night Comes for Us, The Raid, or even to an extent John Wick, this is right up your alley.

It follows a father who, after his daughter is kidnapped, hunts down the men that took her.

Straightforward story, and it is one of the most well-choreographed and bloody knuckle versions of something like Taken that you could ever hope to see.
