Warren KinsellaHOST
6:28
And so I decided to grab the audio and play some of that for you guys and And then I've got music that is meaningful.
Warren KinsellaHOST
6:39
So I got music from BC, The Pointed Sticks, New Pornographers, two bands that I love, and from my youth and my later youth.
Warren KinsellaHOST
6:49
And I've got television.
Warren KinsellaHOST
6:51
And the reason why I'm playing television, of course, is the sad passing of Richard Lloyd at the age of 75.
Ben GibbardSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
5:45
We need to pay our rent.
Bethany CosentinoHOST
5:46
Carl Newman of the New Pornographers remembers when the DIY hustle started feeling a little too literal.
Carl NewmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
5:53
I remember Mint had really bad distribution, so our record was hard to get.
Carl NewmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
5:58
But that was the beginning of people going on whatever it was back then.
Dylan StoneHOST
48:28
Born in Virginia, raised partly in Washington, she eventually landed in Vancouver and became a key figure in the indie music scene.
Dylan StoneHOST
48:37
She's also a member of the New Pornographers.
Dylan StoneHOST
48:39
Until next time, remember, take care of yourselves and take care of each other because that's the way it's supposed

to be.
Tom HarrisonHOST
31:17
And I said, here are some albums that I think would be interesting to to talk to you about? And he's like, I don't know, maybe.
Tom HarrisonHOST
31:26
And then I mentioned that we were also covering new pornographers.
Tom HarrisonHOST
31:29
He's like, oh, I didn't think you would.
Tom HarrisonHOST
31:31
Well, then I want to do mass romantic.
Tom HarrisonHOST
31:57
Yeah.
Tom HarrisonHOST
31:57
One of them was called Mercy, and it was just sort of like sounds of wind and echoey dancing mercy over and over.
Tom HarrisonHOST
32:07
So you may recall also that the first publicly released track by the New Pornographers was Letter for an Occupant on a special that a clothing store put out to – promote all the bands who had played songs at the clothing store and that was the first time there was ever a fucking new pornographers track available commercially there was a destroyer track on that album because obviously they played at this vancouver's clothing store as well that track was mercy but it was it was credited as destroyer versus lasso so we can now say without oh That it was just that Scott Morgan was like, I want to be a dark ambient guy.
Tom HarrisonHOST
32:48
Dan, can I have some destroyer tracks to do my dark ambient music? And he said, okay, Scott, instead of no, put out your own albums, which was the right answer.
Steve LewisHOST
60:25
So, uh, I'm just gonna read, uh, the track listing.
Steve LewisHOST
60:29
We had Sarah Harmer with The Hip doing Silver Road, Kathleen Edwards playing Hockey Skates, The Hip throwing off Class, Our Lady Peace Life, New Pornographers from Vancouver Mass Romantic, Big Sugar Digging a Hole, Tom Wilson, who you know from Junk House and, uh, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings- Matthew Good [bell dinging] Chantel Kreviazuk, Harley McMillan, The Hip again, and, ugh, so [laughs]
Rob WilliamsHOST
60:55
[laughs]
Steve LewisHOST
60:56
The last song when he's, like, making out with, uh, Molly Parker in the street, I tried to Shazam it to find out what it was, 'cause I was like, "I c- I thought this kinda sounds like, uh, Hawksley Workman." And no, it was Paul Gross.
Steve LewisHOST
61:46
Was, they start with Poets, right?
Rob WilliamsHOST
61:48
Yeah, yeah.
Steve LewisHOST
61:48
And they're walking down the ice, and the guy slips, and then they, like, break into Mass Romantic by The New Pornographers right afterwards.
Steve LewisHOST
61:55
It's like, "Yes! Let's go curling."
Michaela SingletonHOST
7:39
I will not.
Patrick HoskinCORRESPONDENT
7:39
[laughs] So the band, The New Pornographers-
Michaela SingletonHOST
7:42
Oh man, whoa.
Michaela SingletonHOST
7:43
Oh dear.
Patrick HoskinCORRESPONDENT
8:21
That show's happening October 24th.
Patrick HoskinCORRESPONDENT
8:24
What was I saying? I was saying it's sort of like an Avengers type situation.
Patrick HoskinCORRESPONDENT
8:26
Like The New Pornographers are the Avengers and the...
Patrick HoskinCORRESPONDENT
8:29
I don't know if Neko Case-
Carl NewmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
0:40
[rain falling] I wish I didn't have this memory because it's such a sad memory.
Courtney E. SmithSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
1:09
That's Carl Newman from The New Pornographers, and we are joining him at his lowest in the spring of 2001.
Carl NewmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
1:16
I was still at my job that I, I hated, and there was a transit strike, and I didn't have a car, so one rainy day after work, I had to walk miles home in the rain.
Carl NewmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
1:28
I think I might have actually been crying in the rain like in the Everly Brothers song.

21 MINS LATER

Bethany CosentinoHOST
22:49
Not every questionable deal came from a place of not caring.
Bethany CosentinoHOST
22:53
Sometimes you just didn't have the full picture.
Bethany CosentinoHOST
22:55
Karl Newman of The New Pornographers found that out the hard way.
Carl NewmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
22:59
A big license we did was Bleeding Heart Show in a University of Phoenix ad, and I honestly didn't know what it was.
Rob HarvillaHOST
16:10
As a gift to myself, I'm leaving myself a window here to talk about Neko Case some more later.
Rob HarvillaHOST
16:16
Same deal with the New Pornographers, the exceedingly rad and mostly Canadian power pop band Neko's been in for 25 plus years now.
Rob HarvillaHOST
16:24
Another time, I promise.
Rob HarvillaHOST
16:26
Neko's next record is a 2004 live album called The Tigers Have Spoken.
Tom HarrisonHOST
1:17
Because, well, if you're gonna talk about my man Dan, you're gonna talk about Dan.
Tom HarrisonHOST
1:22
It'd be insane not to talk about The New Pornographers.
Tom HarrisonHOST
1:25
It's not optional.
Tom HarrisonHOST
1:26
So what this show is today, in terms of your RSS feed, in terms of what page you go to to listen to this podcast, it's still technically Did That Dude Describe Destroyer, but what it really is is, is that Destroyer dude Dan now performing in New Pornographers? And we're gonna be talking about the debut album, Mass Romantic.
Tom HarrisonHOST
1:43
And now this is a real, this is why I've had a weird day, Riley.
Riley HopkinsHOST
1:48
Yeah.
Tom HarrisonHOST
2:25
Um, it's fucking John Collins from Destroyer-
Riley HopkinsHOST
2:30
[laughs]
BrentHOST

BrentHOST
6:37
I could go on forever, but I want to rapid-fire list my personal top 10 shows I've seen there.
BrentHOST
6:43
And, uh, it's actually probably No Means No, but they played there so many times over the years that all the shows blend together.
