The Nevermoor series

And this was the book series that I remember feeling like it had the closest fit to Harry Potter.

Um, I would now argue that the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend actually feels more like Harry Potter to me.

Um, it kinda brings that same, like, exciting, magical, I can't wait to explore the world and see what happens next kinda feeling.

Um, but at the time, Charlie Bone definitely did bring back a lot of the, the vibes of Harry Potter.

It is systemic oppression versus bureaucratic incompetence, and Pullman forces his young protagonist, Lyra, to navigate that massive lethal political machine.

Speaking of protagonists dealing with massive lethal systems, let's talk about the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend.

The protagonist here, Morrigan Crow, shares some distinct thematic DNA with Harry Potter, but the execution is reversed.

How so?

But even Corvus' massive influence cannot stop a magical curse.

No.

So just like Hagrid rescuing Harry from the hut on the rock, Morrigan is whisked away at the last second by a mysterious eccentric man named Jupiter North to a hidden, magical, vibrant city called Nevermoor.

Nevermoor. But she doesn't just get to enroll in a magical school, buy a wand, and relax.

Yes.

Jessica Townsend's Nevermoor, The Trials of Morrigan Crow, Holly Black and Cassandra Clare's The Iron Trial, and Dhonielle Clayton's The Marvellers.

Okay, I wanna look at Nevermoor first because Morrigan Crow's starting point is so incredibly bleak.

Bleak is an understatement.

Right.

She is literally destined to die before she reaches adulthood on this specific day called Eventide, and everyone in her life blames her for every piece of bad luck that happens.

But then, at the absolute last second, this highly eccentric, mysterious figure named Jupiter North whisks her away.

To the magical hidden city of Nevermoor.
