The Monkees

Anyway, back to the story.

Now, when director Russell Mulcahy flew the band out to Antigua in May 1982 to film the accompanying video, the five members were essentially living like the Monkees, occupying adjacent holiday villas.

They were rung up and told a film crew was arriving.

What followed became the quintessential document of early 80s aspirational escapism.

We remember 9-11 in the United States and speak with a retired Perth firefighter who went straight to New York following those events to volunteer with the rescue and recovery efforts alongside other local firefighters.

We caught up with the voice of Countdown and our music guru, Gavin Wood, as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Monkees.

So they weren't really fairgoers.

So I went a couple times, mostly to see shows at the grandstand, like I saw Huey Lewis and the News and Monkeys and stuff like that.

But then when I was in college, I guess, I worked at a booth at the fair in Heritage Square, which is now the West End.

So it was kind of an old-timey area, and it was a beaded jewelry shop.

Well, it was the radio, so whatever was on the radio.

We had access to some vinyl, some 45s, but it would be the typical ones, the Rolling Stones, the Monkees, Herman's Hermits, the Zombies, all of that type of stuff.

The hits on the radio.

But it was top 40 hits.

You're seeing – TV commercials, or fake ones, I should say, you're seeing performance footage, you're seeing observational stuff, just interviews.

You know what this reminded me of? It reminded me of the monkeys in a weird way.

Like, remember the TV show The Monkeys? Because they're playing almost fictionalized versions of themselves.

I mean...

They are who they are, but it seems like it's a little stretched out because as much as we want to get to know Tomb of the Heartbreakers, do we know them better by the end? I don't know, but it just seems like it's more playful, I guess, is what I'm trying to get at for that.
