And then on Monday evening, a new comedy called Miniature Wife.

It stars Elizabeth Banks and Matthew McFadden, and they are a married couple who are forced to reevaluate their relationship after a freak accident shrinks her to about six inches tall, and it starts airing at 9:00 PM.

I've seen the trailer.

But it looks like there's a quite dark sort of undercurrent of, of commentary on control within relationships.

I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing it and giving it a try.

Uh, anything else to flag on the British channels? We've mentioned already, uh, The Chase on Monday evening, but what else have they got?

And it bothers me that we glamorize it so much when it can have these really negative effects.

so it's not just in books like Alchemise but I've seen it recently in other media so to give a more recent example I just recently watched the TV series The Miniature Wife and I felt so confused and conflicted and quite disgusted by the ending I was quite I was enjoying it at first and I thought I explored a bunch of really like difficult topics but in a really interesting way and then by the end of it I was like well this was repulsive basically it's about this woman who um she had to put her career on hold for years and years and years so her husband could focus on his and when she's finally had enough and she tries to leave him he uses the technology that he's been working on to literally shrink her to like to like inches tall like she can stand in the palm of his hand like he physically shrinks her right she's smaller than a human hand and she has to start living in a doll's house in their house and a bunch of other stuff like and the whole time I was watching that series I at first I thought it was this big metaphor for an abusive relationship you know this is an abusive husband abusing his wife you know like how an abuser can make their victim feel smaller and weaker and have less impact on the world and how it can make them feel ignored and unheard i thought it was all like a big analogy for that and you know there are times when when she is so small and miniature he quite literally locks her in the doll's house and she can't escape But he keeps telling her, it's for your own good.

It's for your own safety.

And like, he's so aggressive and angry.

But no.

That didn't happen.

Instead, the couple get a happy ending, where he agrees to make himself smaller too for all of five minutes so that they can go steal some tech or something like that and then that makes them both big and once they're both big again because he's saved the day rather than just her they agree that love conquers all and they agree to give it another go together and that's supposed to be a good thing I'm just left genuinely angry by this like he took away her bodily autonomy he tried to kill her he was repeatedly violent and controlling and aggressive and abusive like and they still end up together and that's portrayed as a happy good thing i i don't get it this is not a relationship we should be romanticizing or portraying as like you know a happy ending when they stay together and i was even more bothered when I read an interview with one of the creators who said of the husband character right this was in like a time article or something where he points out this control analogy that I saw myself and the creator said um or the article says there's an abuse allegory in the miniature wife for those who care to see it though Ames and Turner the creators see Lindy and Les as soulmates and they do reconcile Les the abusive husband's behavior is illustrative of coercive control but the creator justifies this and even the even if the author of the article didn't.

The creator justifies this by saying, control is his love language.

Yeah.

He did direct a couple episodes of The Miniature Wife, now streaming on Peacock.

Yeah, that wife is so tiny.

How she gets small.

I'm going to take you not saying if it was good or bad or a waste of time in consideration with also the reviews of the last house I'm seeing.

and uh kind of combine those into one and and say oh maybe the last house is worth skipping just says the miniature wife i don't know what that is the men at your wife on peacock she said uh comedy drama series it is on peacock in this relationship dramedy about a couple struggling with the imbalance of power in their marriage a husband a scientist makes his wife a novelist with writer's block feel figuratively small and unheard then he accidentally shrinks her to six inches tall so now she's literally small and unheard as the metaphor becomes real okay kind of Kind of on the nose there.

This is an exploration of the fragility of love and ambition cloaked in the absurdity of its premise.
