And so one of the things that we work on in the master classes with him is that um, is that it's like, you have to understand what that person's feeling.

And, you know, we've all, all of us that have been in the acting world know about the, the art of substitution, but it's, it's not even exactly that it's, it's locking into the emotion underneath the words.

And when I've done that in the masterclasses with PJ and with other directors, that's when it resonates the most, because when you understand the emotion, the words will take care of themselves.

It's not trying to put on anger or put on sadness.

You have to be sad.

So I used to be full-on mainline method in my acting approach.

I studied Strasberg method, which is what you think of when you think of method.

I understand what they're meant to do and why one would not do that.

I remember the first time I saw Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master being like, what the heck? Joaquin Phoenix goes on an adventure and comes back basically in the same depressed, sad state as when he left.

There wasn't fundamental transformation that I could tell except for more scars and disappointment and wound.

I may be mischaracterizing it.
