Now, I will say the remake of The Body Snatchers from the 1970s, the ending scene of Donald Sutherland, oh, man, that still creeps me out.
Joel JanecekHOST
50:19
We also have Jennifer's Body, The Love Witch, The Menu.
Joel JanecekHOST

as a tarot deck coming to life maybe there's some things that I missed and I'd like to go back and take a look I think it's a good film you have to understand where it's coming from because I think some people might even be offended by some of the dialogue but you have to just keep in mind that it's a parody and yeah I'm willing to give it a second chance
MikeHOST
21:47
I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece, but I do think it's a very impressive movie functioning on a lot of different levels.
MikeHOST
21:54
So that's our review of The Love Witch.
MikeHOST
21:58
And we'll be back tomorrow with
Kate BelewHOST
55:01
I don't know.
Kate BelewHOST
55:05
The Love Witch, though, I mean, also glamour magic embodied that whole film setup is crazy.
Kate BelewHOST

Yeah.
Kristin LisenbyHOST
55:13
You know, what's funny is I just watched The Witches of Eastwick a couple of nights ago, and I have not seen that movie since I was like a kid.

Yes, I then saw Anna Biller's The Face of Horror.
Michael FairbanksGUEST
13:12
This is her decade-in-the-making follow-up to The Love Witch, which I think is okay.
Michael FairbanksGUEST
13:18
It has a really beautiful technicolor aesthetic that she very much helped cultivate.
Michael FairbanksGUEST
13:23
She's also a costume designer, and that really popped out in that film, but I felt that it got caught in a pretty repetitive rhythm and a pretty narrow view of femininity and what the power of that means and how that functions within witchcraft.
KevHOST
10:59
And you did that to me on purpose? Well, the Vibes
Anna GhoulHOST
11:02
movie is The Love Witch.
KevHOST
11:05
Yeah, we're doing Yoga Hosers.
KevHOST
11:08
I like Love Witch.
KevHOST
11:09
I just, this is not the time.
Anna GhoulHOST
11:11
Can I, pulling back the curtain for the listeners at home, real Harold Mayery thing, throwing out Better Watch Out, a movie I gave one start.
Clif CampbellHOST
87:57
oh.
Clif CampbellHOST
87:57
Out of curiosity, did you happen to catch The Love Witch from 2016? I
C. Courtney JoynerGUEST
88:02
did.
Clif CampbellHOST
88:03
Yes.
LonelyHOST
25:48
So, yes, I have for number four...
LonelyHOST
25:52
I have The Love Witch from 2016, directed by Anna Biller.
LonelyHOST
25:56
A modern-day witch uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her with deadly consequences.
LonelyHOST
26:04
We watched The Love Witch for one of our Valentine's Day episodes, and it was a film that always circulated my, you know, general orbit, I would say, on social media.
LonelyHOST
26:16
It's a really highly screenshotted film because it's very, very pretty.
LonelyHOST
26:21
And I never really sat down to watch it until now.
LonelyHOST
26:23
I don't know if it quite counts as horror, but she does kill a bunch of people, so I'll chalk it up as horror.
LonelyHOST
26:29
This is a Black comedy, and it plays with this idea of almost the same kind of concept of Jennifer's body, where Jennifer goes, I'm not killing people, I'm killing boys, or something like that.
Katie HoganHOST
22:01
The other films I will talk about, so one of the films at the festival that I've been tracking and waiting for for a very, very, very long time was The Face of Horror, which is Annabella's third movie.
Katie HoganHOST
22:18
Now, if everyone remembers The Love Witch...
Katie HoganHOST
22:22
This is Anna Billa's third film.
Katie HoganHOST
22:25
In The Love Witch, she wrote the script, she made the costume, she did the props, she did the production design, she did everything.
Katie HoganHOST
22:32
And in the face of horror, she kind of not copies it, but she emulates what she's done before.
Katie HoganHOST
22:39
But instead of this being a story about a love witch who basically drives men's crazy with her potions, this is a homage to 1960s Technicolor films.
Katie HoganHOST
22:50
And it literally looks like it could have been made in the sixties in a good way.
Katie HoganHOST
22:55
And it's, it's, it's a horror.
Jess O’KaneGUEST
37:24
Which has been at a few festivals and I think it's going to be at LFF.
Jess O’KaneGUEST
37:27
I don't know if I'm going to get to see it, but I love The Love Witch.
Jess O’KaneGUEST
37:31
I think it's such a fascinating piece of filmmaking.
Jess O’KaneGUEST
37:37
And I think, so actually Leo Suter who's in it was in a short film of mine years ago called The Devil's Harmony and he's a great little actor and I think as soon as I saw he was cast I was like oh god that's such a good role for him because he does look like Prince Charming and I love that she's doing this sort of pastiche of Hamahora, which I used to love watching.
