all the things.
Dan SinkerHOST
14:44
I've been playing this video game called The Long Dark, which is just about surviving in the Canadian wilderness.
Dan SinkerHOST
14:50
Yes.
Dan SinkerHOST
14:51
And what you've basically described is the bare minimum of what you're carrying around and what you're looking for all the time so that when you inevitably... as I do regularly, fall down half a mountain or get attacked by a wolf or anything else, then you can just quickly bandage up your ankle or take a painkiller or an antibiotic and you're set because you've got it in your bag.

I said this last livestream, but I'm going to announce it here on the podcast too.
speaker_0HOST
27:08
If something happens in the next livestream, or if I lose the Long Dark Thousand Days Challenge, I'm just going to livestream Fallout from now on.
speaker_0HOST
27:16
Because I wanted an excuse to play Fallout for anything, you know? Like, the problem is, I'm pretty sure all the music is copyrighted, so I don't know how it's gonna work.
speaker_0HOST
27:27
Can I even livestream Fallout without risking copyright infringement? Because there's a lot of copyright in there, right? The entirety of the Galaxy News Radio is all copyrighted music.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
119:19
We played some Fortnite.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
119:22
I had a heartbreak in The Long Dark, so much so that I don't know if I'm going to be playing the game again for a while.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
119:32
Oh, I think we know.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
119:34
I mean, you know, eventually probably, but I didn't delete the game off the system, but man, I had such a game going and my hubris yet again, like caused me to get killed.
Mark MeerGUEST
66:29
And it had a narrative element that we were releasing episodically over the course of years.
Mark MeerGUEST
66:35
And that is The Long Dark.
Mark MeerGUEST
66:37
And so it's narrative mode.
Mark MeerGUEST
66:39
Winter Mute has ended.
Mark MeerGUEST
67:21
Yeah, and it also has David Hayter, who you probably know as Snake from the Metal Gear Solid.
Mark MeerGUEST
67:28
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
Mark MeerGUEST
67:30
uh also Elias Tufexis uh who uh does so much he's like in Star Trek and uh yeah uh oh he's also I mean Adam Jensen in Deus Ex uh is the one that people are always begging for for more of that so we're all we're all Canadian the game is set in Canada uh and I have jokingly referred to it in the past as player versus Canada because that's kind of what it is What's the name of it again? It's called The Long Dark.
Mark MeerGUEST
67:56
The Long Dark.
Eddie EdwardsHOST
8:33
It's a commitment, and I would have needed more of a run-up to clear time.
Eddie EdwardsHOST
8:40
I play like I say I play LA 1800 I haven't finished Baldur's Gate I've got Fallout London that I'm still working through Spider-Man I just downloaded The Long Dark because it was $2.79 on Steam and I'm just like yeah okay I've got a lot I've got all three I've got the Tomb Raider remasters to go through and then at some point I'm going to have to get to Oblivion which let me tell you about my experience playing the first Oblivion right um I played the first Oblivion for four months before I went round my mate's house to see him playing it, and he was in full Daedric armor, and I asked where he got it, and he said, oh, I got it from one of the Oblivion gates, to which I said, what are those? And he said, what do you mean? And I was like, you know you have to do the second main storyline mission in the original Oblivion to...
Eddie EdwardsHOST
9:33
unlock the Oblivion gates opening up around the place.
Eddie EdwardsHOST
9:35
No. Yeah, you do.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
197:58
Animal Crossing, Old Horizons, obviously.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
198:02
Played a little bit more of The Long Dark, obviously.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
198:05
I started a... custom interloper game which uh custom yeah you can like customize like all kinds of stuff in your survival game so this
Nikki HillPANELIST
198:17
isn't hard enough i want more moose
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
199:26
So anyways, turn scurvy off, uh, nerf the wolves a little bit.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
199:30
And when you do a custom game, it allows you to, um, use perks on interloper.
Dew MichaelsPANELIST
199:36
You can only use two perks, but on a custom game you can use, I think it's six might be five, uh, uh and i and you get the perks by playing a lot so like i got all these perks and i want to use them you know so like so i'm doing a custom game but in the uh it's lovingly referred to in the long dark community as intercoper because you're trying to cope with the fact that interloper is really hard so you made it easier for yourself but uh but anyways so
Nikki HillPANELIST
200:05
sorry it sounds like mom brain has something to say to raw meat
speaker_0HOST
7:14
I'm gonna toot my own horn just a little more.
speaker_0HOST
7:17
The livestream, if you're not up to date with it, I've just been doing a thousand day challenge on The Long Dark, a game that's not too easy to do.
speaker_0HOST
7:26
You gotta eat food, drink water, and go to sleep.
speaker_0HOST
7:29
Make sure you're warm.
speaker_0HOST
9:44
And it's awesome.
speaker_0HOST
9:44
It's fucking awesome.
speaker_0HOST
9:45
I love shit like that, right? I feel like the long dark, the reason for me doing the thousand day challenge is because I've never done it before successfully.
speaker_0HOST
9:53
I've never even gotten to 500 days.
KyleHOST
23:15
saw that on Steam and I was like this looks like one of those not a cozy game because it's kind of stressful but almost like a therapeutic game it looked fun
MattHOST
23:26
it's not for me but I did like the art style kind of reminded me of those like Telltale games and like The Long Dark like that comic graphic novel type of yeah i i like the art style but it's it's not a game that i'm
KyleHOST
23:43
i was this close to getting it on steam yeah
MattHOST
23:47
i was almost getting it
MattHOST
17:35
And then I...
MattHOST
17:36
So because I couldn't think of anything to play, I told Jack a while ago that I would give The Long Dark another shot, and so I finally downloaded it, and I'm trying the survival mode, and...
MattHOST
17:48
while i still hate it um there's a part of me who's very very intrigued now because it's it's much different when you're free from the narrative um like when you actually can just kind of focus on the survival element because that game is pretty deep uh deep enough to where i found myself actually watching some videos to actually kind of learn how to properly play it so i'm gonna give it a fair run i i tried it once and i didn't know any of the controls and uh fairly certain i'm you know freezing to death as we speak in my save state but um but yeah i'll give it a few more shots because it is a much different game in the survival mode compared to the main campaign that i played before
JackHOST
18:33
i first picked up the long dark ryan gave me one piece of advice and that was just get the cat tails that's all he told me and it's like it makes a world of difference
MattHOST
18:43
he told me the same
JackHOST
18:44
thing

17 MINS LATER

JackHOST
35:49
think permadeath, the thing that it really brings to games, and I think it's kind of interesting because when it's designed to be permadeath i think it typically the balance makes a lot more sense to that
DaveHOST
36:06
the the balance
Jackson BalyHOST
64:39
I think often in a video game, a mistake is death, and then you just have to go like, oh, I won't do that.
Jackson BalyHOST
64:44
But games, again, like The Long Dark or like Can, it's like you make a mistake, okay, live with it.
Jackson BalyHOST
64:48
And that's awesome.
Jackson BalyHOST
64:49
Not enough games do that.
