And Eli, what are we talking about today?

Today we're talking about The Kids Are All Right, the influential 2010 lesbian love story from Lisa Chodolenko, which won Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress.

Some of the themes we'll explore are when it's especially hard to get over an affair, whether it's unusual for a gay woman to be attracted to a man, and how role arrangements differ between straight and gay couples.

And fair warning, we will be spoiling this movie today.

Okay.

But to be a bit of a buzzkill...

I actually want to take the phrase, the kids are all right, and interrogate that a bit.

Now, look, at a surface level, I get it.

Positive portrayal of gays.

The kids are all right.

Have you seen that movie? Oh, and that Bennings

and Julianne Moore?

Hopefully I'll be able to talk about that amazing trio at some point, but it was in fact The Children's Hour, which hate to say it was a pleasant surprise, you know, but I'm always so delighted when the patrons choose more older options because I know that I've found my people.

But [laughs] before we dive into Children's Hour, John, I know you have a lot of expertise in Oscar history and I'm curious if you had any thoughts about how we often get to this scenario where we have multiple women as the lead of a film and sometimes one is able to sneak in like Annette Bening for Kids Are All Right or Nicole Kidman in The Hours, but it is relatively rare I would say, and there's only been five films in Oscar history that have scored two Best Actress nominations, the last being for Thelma & Louise 35 years ago.

So do you have any theories or thoughts on why we often see these robberies for multiple actresses in the same film?

Yeah, I think part of the issue is the most obvious one.

Now, what he is actually saying, which is not antisemitic at all, happens to be supported by most Americans, most people in the West, and most people on Earth, and all of that is linked to why he is being smeared.

Now, the Emmy Award-winning actor known for playing the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as films such as Spotlight, Foxcatcher, and the Kids Are All Right, is being smeared specifically because he's spoken out against the $111 billion merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Brothers Discovery.

Now, there's lots of reasons he's opposing that merger.

He opposes it on media concentration grounds.

There's still a closed down straight of four moves because that is the main leverage that they currently have.

And this has sparked something really, really unique, a new unique discourse that I wanna talk about very quickly because Mark Ruffalo, one of the largest actors out there, obviously known as the Hulk, he was also in The Kids Are All Right.

He's in a lot of movies that I really, really like.

He had to respond to accusations that he's antisemitic coming from Paramount.

Yeah, l- and listen, that is so, uh, classique for a queer person, which is relating to Julianne Moore's depression.

I also, speaking of sort of gay, um, plot connections, the movie that I watched more recently than I would like to admit of hers is The Kids Are All Right.
