The Independent Review

Both were written in nineteen oh two.

The first appeared originally in the Independent Review for nineteen oh three, the second in the New Quarterly, November nineteen oh seven.

In Theoretical Ethics, the position advocated in The Freeman's Worship is not quite identical with that which I hold now.

I feel less convinced than I did then of the objectivity of good and evil, but the general attitude towards life which is suggested in that essay still seems to me, in the main, the one which must be adopted in times of stress and difficulty by those who have no dogmatic religious beliefs if inward defeat is to be avoided.

And like I said before, uh, one of the fellows that's, uh, he put, he put together an organization called Path to Hope and Peace.

And, um, uh, the other fellow, uh, David Bato, is with the Independent Review, he put a piece together about the Swiss canton system, saying two-state solution isn't really gonna work in, uh, in Israel, um, a- and, uh, there's gotta be a way that people can live together.

And, uh, so the two of them started talking about that.

But that's a top-down solution, putting together a canton system.

But So Matt and I have got to know each other a little bit, and I subscribe to his sub-stack.

But he has been asked by the Independent Review to pull together a number of thinkers, essayists, scholars, and so forth to reflect on this very thing.

Are we going to be able to keep this thing going? So anyway, I think the name of his sub-stack is Arcadalia, if I remember correctly.

But rather than – I will have us – I will make certain we've got a link in the show notes, but just so folks don't need to go to the link in the show notes, I'm going to read a couple of pages from the article that focuses in on the subject of virtue.

And the purpose of this was to draw a reluctant, peace-loving American public into the war or good or ill.

So yeah, that's a big one that we're doing.

And then we've been doing some stuff around the 250th anniversary, some conferences and special supplements in our journal, the Independent Review.
