The fear is the disease, not the symptom, which always brings to mind the ultimate historical irony of the playwright Moliere.

He wrote the famous satirical play Le Malade Imaginaire, The Imaginary Invalid, which mercilessly mocked a hypochondriac who was terrified of doctors and constantly imagined he was dying.

And then, in a twist of dark fate, Moliere actually collapsed on stage while playing the lead role, the hypochondriac, and died that very night of pulmonary tuberculosis.
