The two films based on his work in the 1940s, The Human Comedy and The Time of Your Life, were strong films, neither of which earning as much success as the original properties they were based on.

Soroyan also hated the results of both.

As television was still finding its feet in the 1950s, Sorian saw a great opportunity to gain an arena where he could have more control over his output.
