The Great Australian Camel Race

But there were lots of things going on all over Australia.

One of those was something called the Great Australian Camel Race, in which scores of people race camels from Alice Springs to the Gold Coast over a period of three months.

Now, one of the participants in the Great Australian Camel Race was our next guest tonight, Dr. Jill Colwell.

She had ridden plenty of horses and kind of thought getting on a camel might not be too different.

She was in for a little bit of a shock.

But all these years later, Jill's just created a picture book for kids telling the story of her relationship with Tiki, her somewhat tempestuous camel.

And we thought we'd have a yarn tonight, just remembering this Great Australian Camel Race and get a sense of what it was like.

Jill, hello.
