The Gray Man

Blade Runner 2049 was so good.

You know what he's really good in? This movie called Gray Man.

He's fantastic.

[laughs] There it is.

He stopped playing the Marvel movies, but he went on to that one movie.

It's not Grayman? Grayman, yeah.

Grayman.

That's Ryan Gosling, I think.

Yeah.

And sometimes the translation process is a tug of war between creating massive spectacle and preserving quiet intimacy.

Mark Greeney's novel The Gray Man is a lean, mean, hyper-technical book heavy on CIA tradecraft.

But the 2022 film directed by the Russo brothers, it's a massive $200 million globe-trotting star vehicle.

Ryan Gosling stars as Court Gentry, the operative who is so incredibly effective that his own agency decides he's a liability and needs to be deleted.

So that's definitely one to skip.

I would also skip The Gray Man, which is Gosling's more recent Netflix movie, which I will give it points for over something like Gangster Squad, just in the sense that there's a little bit more of the Gosling charm.

Ana de Armas is fun in the movie.

That's right.

We're getting in the way of this movie as we talk about it.

The Gray Man was the last thing, and that was July.

Either way, yeah.

Uh, but once you get outside of that, I'm just like, I just...

You know, you watch things like The Gray Man or things like...

And you're just like, "Oh, my God." You aren't doing anything.

You're literally just doing straight to DVD schlock here.

You, you kind of see a Netflix style.

And then if...

Like, you can use The Gray Man as an example, and that is th- you... with, uh, Ryan Gosling, which on paper, like that could've been cool.

Um, but just, it just wasn't.

I feel like when we do episodes like this, you're always the one that leads them and always comes with a really good story for me to listen to.

So this week, I bring to the table Netflix's movie, The Last House.

I've seen nothing about this, actually.

I watched it the other day alone on the couch, and I really, I did not have high hopes, first of all, because this is a Netflix movie, but I did have just a slight ounce of, yeah, I want this movie to succeed.

because it does star Greta Lee and Wagner Mora who are like low-key like my celebrity crushes so when I was like oh this movie has both of them and they're married like that's low-key kissment and like that'll be my OTP remember when OTP was a thing

that was so many like words in a row that um yeah it was a lot of words in a row

I don't know.

Then we had Barbie from Greta Gerwig there.

And before that, we had the Gray Man from Anthony and Joe Russo.

And that movie was like, Terrible, you know, and then we went back to 12 to Blade Runner 2049 from Daniel knew like it's like

when he did First Man with Chazelle Damien Chazelle, but it's like La La Land.

Like you got to throw something in there that like makes me think you're going to keep doing like acting.

Yeah.

I feel like the first man, it was the split between the first man and the gray man.

And I think the gray man was really a COVID thing where he's like, I just want to do something.
