Do you remember that movie that came out a long time ago? Yeah.

The Gods Must Be Crazy? And the little Coke bottle? Right.

Yeah.

But they see the ecosystem around them that they see every day.

And that is sort of like these are some of these subsidized films that found a wider audience.

And one of them was The Gods Must Be Crazy from 1980.

And I've never seen that, but I remember it.

I remember my parents watching it.

random things oh if if you haven't seen just for everybody who hasn't seen the gods must be crazy it's about it's it's a story about a tribe in africa that has no connection with the modern world and a and a pilot in an airplane throws a coke bottle out the window as he flies over their area And so the Coke bottle lands, and they're like, what is this for? Gifts from the gods.

Yeah, one of them's going to go.

It's a religion." And they push this religion around the globe like missionaries, reaching every corner of the earth.

This became the butt end of a joke of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, where an indigenous tribe in Africa mistake a Coke bottle as a message from the gods.

According to Dr. Chidester, in this movie, we find Coke as a sacred sign, a sign subject to local misreading, but nevertheless of a global religion.

This sounds absurd, but how do we refute it? If religion is a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful moods, if it's a system that clothes conceptions of the world with an aura of factuality, it makes sense, right? It sounds so fancy, so convincing, and Clifford Geertz is just so dang smart.
