The Ghost and the Darkness

For a time it seemed that someone was killed nearly every night.

Colonel Patterson had set bait, crafted traps, waited in trees, and even used himself as bait to catch the two murderers that the poor, frightened workers had nicknamed The Ghost and The Darkness.

[tense music] There have been reports of strange creatures in the area.

Witnesses say they couldn't believe what they were seeing.

You know what I mean? So okay, so let's move on to the gist.

First and foremost, this show is called A Place of Slaughter, and the reason being is we're gonna be talking about the man eaters of Tsavo.

And this was the movie made into The Ghost and the Darkness.

And I was gonna recommend people watch the movie because it starred Val Kilmer and, uh, Michael Douglas.

You will have seen his work.

He has worked on such greats as Maverick, The Ghost in the Darkness, Heaven's Gate, the infamous Heaven's Gate.

He also was the, um, DOP for Blow Out.

[gasps]

I wish I knew how to quit you.

He had The Island of Dr. Moreau, Dead Girl, and The Ghost and the Darkness in '96, this movie in '97, and Prince of Egypt in 1998.

Ghost and the Darkness, fucking banger.

But Val Kilmer stars as...

Val's long-haired artist character Thomas Moore had a passable imitation of a South African accent, specifically Capetonian.

He refers to his home in Africa and uses the vernacular Afrikaans pronunciation of Jesus, Jesus, as an expletive.

Kilmer learned the accent from a South African assistant with whom he worked on The Ghost and the Darkness.

Banger.

You know what? I'm gonna take a movie that many people don't know about, and it's a shame, because it's one of my favorite all-time movies, and I think it'd be really cool.

But anyway, it's a book just about all these stories.

And one of the stories in that book that I loved that later was turned into a movie was called The Ghost in the Darkness.

And it was about these two man-eating lions.

You've seen it? Now I'm coming around Michael Douglas, man.

Some of them, they drug off, they were coming in at night.

They were like jumping fences, like fires didn't scare them off.

And so the movie is called the ghost in the darkness.

And it's about just when I think of a man eating lion, that's what I think.
