The Frames

Damian Dempsey with Sing All Our Cares Away I first saw Glenn Hansard perform in Dublin at the 25th anniversary of the Lisden Violin Festival in 2003.

He was performing there with his band The Frames and this next track is The Frames with the beautiful Star Star.

Now Nick Parker posted his own tribute to Glenn along with his own track Never Been to Dublin Before.

I never saw it.

I know about The Frames.

I don't think I know a song by them.

And he's just somebody that kind of passed me by, but obviously a very tragic...

We were sitting in catering together at that show.

The Frames played and the Hold Steady played.

So that caused me to look back at the schedule for the day.

And the Hold Steady played first on a stage.

We hadn't put out Boys and Girls in America yet.

It was the summer before.

And we played against the Frames.

The Frames were playing another stage.

Except maybe Cameron Crowe, whose music bona fides come from absorbing wisdom from top 70s bands as a teen journalist for Rolling Stone, which we talked about in our Almost Famous episode from several seasons ago.

But born in Dublin, John Carney played bass in an Irish rock band, The Frames, alongside future Oscar winner Glenn Hansard.

That background gives his movies an authenticity that is difficult to manufacture.

He understands the awkwardness of rehearsal, the vulnerability of performing, the exhilaration of stumbling onto a melody, and perhaps most importantly, the strange intimacy of making a song with another person.

So, man.

And then, of course, the Irish singer-songwriter and frontman of The Frames and star of the movie Once and the band The Swell Season passed away at age 56 from a motorcycle accident on July 29th.

That hit really hard.

Yeah.

And I'd love to just listen to that.

And the second would be, one of my first concerts I ever attended was a band called The Frames.

So Glenn Hansard from, dude, he just passed away this week.

And I sat in the car this week in America and listened to these old records and just cried my way through the whole lot of them.

Frames.

And then I got into The Frames, which I thought was like – and his – passion and his fire you know it was so i've never really seen any like quote indie rock like that like so hard on the sleeve in a way yeah you know
