The Fox and the Hound

I don't know.

Todd and Copper are The Fox and the Hound.

Oh.

Yeah.

The Fox and the Hound is a very well-liked movie by its fans, but it wasn't a massive hit.

And then The Black Cauldron was a financial disaster.

So the idea of doing an animated film about Sherlock Holmes with animals was first discussed during the production of The Rescuers in the mid-1970s.

after this and it all and it does start pat as you're saying with the modernization of the storytelling being this um less classically themed more modern and hip is the wrong word but i think you know what i'm going for with what it does in terms of just where we are in the 80s and entertainment

yeah i I think at least from my perspective, a lot of the story and the way that the characters interplay, it feels more modern in the sense that you can enjoy it as a little, little kid, but then older kids can also get into it.

I think something that always held the fox and the hound back was that's either for like little, little kids or like that's for adults to really enjoy because it is a very like emotional film.

But I don't know if like older kids would be as into it.

I was chatting with them the other day, and we're going to shout them all out here because they gave me some really cool things, some cool films to mention.

So Ben Astell, he mentioned Homeward Bound and Fox and the Hound.

So again, dog movies.

Uh, and so, uh, to quickly go through it, like, Brad Bird went to Disney, didn't like what was going on at Disney then.

He worked on Fox and the Hound and early times on The Black Cauldron.

It was a messy, messy time at Disney.

He is bouncing up against management all the time thinking they are unimaginative.

Yeah, these are all animal movies.

I don't love The Rescuers.

I don't love The Fox and the Hound.

And thankfully, my wife is not here to hear me say I don't love The Black Cauldron.

My wife loves The Black Cauldron because I don't know why, but she loves The Black Cauldron.

Well, you know what? We're going to stick with animated for the next one.

That is very good, but it also... drives me bananas because it's so sad.

Now, there's no surprise that Ebert was not a huge fan of this film, but he didn't hate it either.

But this film wasn't made for an older-than-middle-aged film critic.

It was, however, made for someone like me, who, in 1991 when this came out, was almost about to turn 13.

I remember seeing this movie at my local theater with a group of friends during the summer of 1991.

Of course, you have Christina Applegate playing Sue Ellen.

As I mentioned, Applegate was best known at this point for her role in Married With Children, and every boy at this age had a thing for her.

She did appear in smaller roles and smaller budget films, but this was the first film where she was the main star.
