The Flaming Lips

It's no surprise that they went after this one.

I'm talking about the Flaming Lips.

Flaming Lips will be breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for the most live performances played in multiple cities.

Does anyone have any guesses as to how many concerts they performed in just one day? Just to clarify, in order for these concerts to count for the world record, they had to be performed in different cities and had to be officially verified by a Guinness World Records representative along the way.

All right, so I'll tell you the answer in a minute.

Flaming Lips have always been pleasantly weird from the start, thanks in large part to their front man, Wayne Coyne.

Formed in Oklahoma City in 1983, the Flamin' Libs spent their initial decade navigating the North American alternative rock underground.

Defined by surrealist song structures, noise pop experimentation, and Queen's distinct artistic vision, the band built a dedicated cult following via constant touring across small venues.

And there are indeed other musicians that contribute to some of these songs.

But Bumpy, the label that issued this release, references early Flaming Lips, Ween, and Os Mutantes.

And I think those do paint a fairly pretty accurate picture of the overall sound.

That's quite playful, groove-oriented, very psychedelic.

Exactly.

All I could find, and I would encourage you to check this out if you haven't already, for a lot of people listening, is there are trailers on YouTube and it looks completely bonkers because it looks like something like, it looks like Flaming Lips doing songs in tribute to Ken Carter.

They're wearing the same outfits and they're driving the same car that he drove in it, but it's all like musical stuff with cellos and it looks completely bizarre.

But anyway, my point is, Aim for the roses.

so so the funny thing too that came up so so of course warner got a lot of bad publicity about this it's like you idiots paid for the album twice right um and so they because of that they vowed that it would never happen again and so they started making a concerted effort to invest in more indie bands like the flaming lips And Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips later said, quote, we are benefiting from the label's regret over Wilco.

We are living in a golden age of that being such a public mistake.

The people on Warner said, we'll never have a band like Wilco feel like we don't believe in them again.

He was kicking around Madison back when I was and our paths crossed again.

And they were doing a big headlining show here with Flaming Lips and...

Butch and I reconnected and he said, what can I do to help? And that's really, that was about 2013, started what it is now, which is this all-star jam thing where Butch and some of his friends serve as a house band.

And then we get John Resnick from the Dolls and Max Collins from Eve Six and Bangles and Go-Go's and Tears for Fears.

The Flaming Lips had to give 75% of the royalties from their 2003 song Fight Test to this artist for biting off the 1970 song Father and Son.
