The Famous Five

They were the ones that led the fight.

It's interesting that the famous five are from Western Canada.

Why do you think that is?

I think the reason for that is explained by the history of Western Canada.

The suffrage movement really got going in Western Canada, and there was the United Farmers Party, which was quite a kind of populist, leftish sort of party.

And so there was a great spirit in Western Canada for radical thinking, questioning the sacred cows, so to speak, and trying to do things in a new and different way.

Many Canadians regard the Famous Five as heroes, but the women are criticized and attacked by some because they held views that we regard today as very racist.

They were prominent in what's now called the eugenics movement, the movement that argued that people with physical or mental disabilities shouldn't be able to reproduce, should be sterilized.
