Or maybe that's in Unwritten Tales or whatever, one of the short story books.

It's hard for me to know what is in the Book of Lost Tales, in the other fragment book, and then this book.

And he lists some stuff.

The fall of Gondolin, the lay of Beren and Luthien, in verse, the children of Hurin.

I am distressed for myself to be unable to find the Rings of Power, which with the fall of Numenor is the link between the Silmarillion and the Hobbit world.

And I've got four episodes about that story, so check them out if you haven't.

But they return in The Fall of Gondolin, where we read, At last, in the year when Eärendil was seven years old, Morgoth was ready, and he loosed upon Gondolin his Balrogs and his orcs and his wolves, and with them came dragons of the brood of Glaurung, and they were become now many and terrible.

Now we've talked in our episodes on The Fall of Gondolin and in our mailbag segment on Glorfindel and Ecthelion about the part the Balrogs played in that battle, where Ecthelion, Lord of the Fountains, slew Gothmog, dying in the process, and Glorfindel also cast a Balrog down from a great height to defeat it, also dying in the process.

But because Tolkien never finished that tale, we don't know many of the specifics.

The earliest version of the story, as we'll talk about in a minute or two, looked very different from the version of The Silmarillion.
