The Enemy Within

They know from the title of the episode if they looked at their podcast app, maybe.

But we are going to talk about today, for the 60th anniversary-ish, the enemy within, the... one of the all-time great original series episodes, which features a Sulu who is freezing to death and quite annoying, I might add, while he's freezing to death.

But that's the episode we're going to talk about.

So, Phil, what you suggested this one, what made you think of it? Well,

to to make that happen and all the while we're like what is under the the black sheet that is on a pedestal behind them that was not there during the Starfleet Academy panel um but Shatner talked about, particularly within the power of Star Trek, the idea that you could have gone one way, but you chose another and that you regret that.

Even bringing up, you know, oh, should you have married this woman? And then these clips here, the first shown from The Enemy Within, that's the famous one where Kirk is split into two.

And after Ben Stiller introduced that clip, explains to Shatner that he owns the green tunic that Captain Kirk wears in this episode.

Of course, Shatner at 95 and a half has no memory of filming this, which was Stiller's primary question.

... an inherently funny premise that it's [laughs] enjoyable to see.

But, um, but then the other thing is, unfortunately, the first time we saw Spock with these reactions was The Enemy Within, when he's kind of laughing at, uh, Yeoman Rand's sexual assault allegations.

Yeah.

The Enemy Within is the second story included in Star Trek VIII.

Okay.

So that one is Spock's Brain, The Enemy Within, Catspaw, Where No Man Has Gone Before, Wolf in the Fold, and For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky.

Well, that explains why, 'cause Blish didn't know it existed yet.

Okay.

I think if you go through it carefully, you might find a way to have the three seasons of Star Trek we saw, have the episodes overlap with each other to make it work.

We're continuing our split-in-two theme month with the very first split-in-two episode in Star Trek history, "The Enemy Within," written by Richard Matheson, directed by Leo Penn.

It was the fourth episode of the original series that was produced, but the fifth to air, which happened on October 6th, 1966 on NBC.

Memory Alpha describes it, "A transporter malfunction splits Captain Kirk into two people, one good and the other evil, and neither capable of functioning well separately." What an episode.

And he just kind of like doesn't do anything.

But also like, is that one of the same guys that harasses her and the enemy within when they're not under the influence of anything? They're just assholes.
