Though Linn County supervisors can choose to deny Alliant's application, the Iowa Utilities Commission has the authority to overrule the county.

Alliant Energy first attempted to build a natural gas-fired electricity plant in Linn County near the Eastern Iowa Airport.

That application was denied when the airport said the facility posed safety threats to airport operations.

Alliant began the approval process for the new Morgan Valley Energy Center site south of Highway 30 near Linn-Benton Road.

I drive by it all the time.

And, you know, what got me about this was, number one, just how quickly they're going up.

Officials with payload in Lynn County, for example, have stated the city will not offer any sort of tax break for a proposed Google data center project that could end up within the city limits.

The city of Cedar Rapids approved 20-year, 70% property tax breaks for the two data center campuses curly under construction near the Eastern Iowa Airport in southwest Cedar Rapids, one from Google and another from QTS.

The Google site has a minimum required investment of $576 million, although actual costs are expected to land closer to $3.5 billion.

QTS is expected to invest closer to $4.5 billion, with a minimum investment of $750 million based on its development agreement with the city.
