The Deviants

Well, from the sublime to the ridiculous.

This is a band called The Deviants.

And they started life in the kind of mid to late 60s as the social deviants, but then decided to drop the social bit because they weren't very social, apparently.

But the deviants were formed by a guy called Mick Farron, who was a kind of mover in the kind of psychedelic scene early on.

And he was, you know, involved with kind of newspapers and he was a bit of a journalist and a poet and all that stuff and he formed the Social Deviants with a bunch of people and they did a free album I think with the It magazine International Times magazine and you could only get the album it was called Patoof like a Roy Lichtenstein sleeve on it.

You could only get that by sending off from International Times.

Later, it got reissued on Decca Records in the 60s.

And Disposable came out on Stable Records.

But it wasn't only the big names.

Underground bands such as the Pink Fairies, the Deviants, and the Edgar Broughton band carved out their own raw brand of garage rock, turning cheap amps and plywood stages into sonic playgrounds.

They pushed guitar feedback to new extremes while keeping song structure simple enough for a teenage ear.

And let's not forget the first real punk girls Patti Smith brought poetic angst to rock with her New York Streetscape, while Siouxsie Sue added a post-punk gothic twist that pushed sound into darker textures.
