It, it's like why are we constantly recreating this idealized kind of historical portrait of a city rather than just like actually living in that world? I think too much street life has been eliminated from the city in terms of like vendors and very basic like window displays.

Like, everything is like an advertisement.

But it was definitely a very different vibe in New York than there is now.

I guess my frame of reference is the HBO show The Deuce from the creator of The Wire, which was great and really depicted the city during that time.

But anyway, like what you're describing and I guess what that television show showed us, I think that's what Miller was responding to.

And I think his way in as he talked about it and as you see on the page was to really bring the real world into it.
