In the 1970s, he was in dozens of TV episodes and in the miniseries Salem's Lot, where he was the vampire in the rocking chair.

Lewis was in cult movies like Welcome Home, Soldier Boys, The Culpepper Cattle Company, Dillinger, and Macon County Line, and he was in seven Clint Eastwood movies, most notably as the leader of the gang in High Plains Drifter, and as Eastwood's buddy in Every Which Way but Loose and Any Which Way You Can.

Bronson was always involved with the staging of the action in his films, and it was his suggestion that Jean Davis pick up the chair and bash the door.
