The Commitments

I suppose it's hard for people to imagine when they look at it now, the nearest I can direct people towards would be, fill in its old town, go have a look at that video and you'll see what the Docklands used to look like.

There's some scenes at the end of The Commitments as well, where you see very desolate area.

To take all that from warehouses, to look at it now, that it took 30 years, it makes probably a lot more sense.

While all this land was there, some of it was publicly owned, some of it was privately owned, and it was all very awkward in terms of how it was jigsawed together in that regard.

They are brilliant.

They've played as support acts to people like Wilson Pickett and Maxi Priest, The Commitments, and several of the past band members were people like Ross Hannaford, who, of course, is well-known for being in Daddy Cool, or James Black, who was with Mondo Rock and in Rock Whiz, Greg Hamm from Man at Work.

and Gary Young, who was also in Daddy Cool.

So they have got a few gigs coming up.

And it also [laughs] do you remember the s- the movie The Commitments?

Yeah.

The, they were just like movies that would show up at the video store that always seemed to be taken out.

Yeah.

It was like The Commitments, Singles, Reality Bites to some degree at the video store.

And then there were these soundtracks that existed, and I never saw the movies, but there was-

You knew the soundtracks.

The one when he first recommended why people should see you back in the early 2000s and everything else and gradually how that friendship blossomed.

Yeah, it's still, I still kind of, I haven't, processed it at all like do you know and like even like I his death I mean you know it's really really an awful awful shock to the whole music community I'm sure Bono talked about how there were 78,000 people or something who claim he was their best friend friend and none of them are lying or something to that extent I thought that was very accurate and very nice but I would have known Glenn sort of peripherally from the frames we mentioned earlier he was so you know prior to um i know you know all this but just for any listeners who may not like the viewers who may not like prior to the oscar and the swell season and his solo career and again afterwards glenn was in a band called the frames who were very very big in ireland they were they were they were and they were also very very good you know that that kind of came about on the after um The Commitments, which he was in as well, of course.

But I would go to see the Frames.

At the end of Alan Parker's 1991 movie, The Commitments, based on the Roddy Doyle novel of the same name.

The main character Jimmy's dream of managing a successful Irish R&B band goes belly up in spectacular fashion when the band gets in a massive fight at their big gig, which leaves their lead singer sprawled out in the alley with his face all busted up and bleeding.

And as Jimmy walks home later that night, along the port of Dublin in the moonlight.

Recently, one of the very famous Irish musicians, who was a guy I grew up with, same age as me, went to the same schools, just died in a motorcycle accident, which is kind of close to home for me is having a near fatal motorcycle accident myself.

And he was in my favorite Irish movie called The Commitments.

He was a great character.

He won an Oscar for best soundtrack.
