The Commitments

Prison was the ultimate one.

But some of our films, the commitments about working class boys trapped it.

A film I've just written, a screenplay recently by Brian Johnson, the ACDC singer, was that being broadened in that atmosphere of this is what you're going to be.

And it's stupid to think otherwise.

You're home.

Very moving.

You talked about the commitments and films you've done.

Is it a very different discipline, writing a film as opposed to a series? And of course, sometimes the series become films, like with Porridge and The Lightly Lads.

a man called The Commotion.

You know that movie, The Commitments? It's based on them.

Ah, because Commotion, Commitments, they're very similar, yeah.

Oh, my goodness.

Wasn't it? The Commitments came out in '91, so we were, in '92, we were at the Grammys.

And, um, I knew she was gonna be there, and I seen her photog- you know, where they have-

Yeah, yeah

... onto your best path.

But, um, the, we cannot, I cannot not talk about The Commitments, but-

And it's edited so well, directed by Alan Parker, who did so many musicals over the years, and really different kinds of musicals.

If you look at between this and Pink Floyd, The Wall, and The Commitments, and Evita.

These are extremely different movies, but like a love of music is definitely infused and a love of performance is infused through it.

So you just follow them along, freshman, sophomore, junior, senior year.

Um, you know, John Cypher, Vincent Pastore, Big Pussy from, uh, you know, Sopranos, um, died.

It was-- it, it's just been- Glenn Hansard, uh, the Irish, the great Irish musician, uh, and star of the movie Once and The Commitments, um, he was taken from us.

Uh, Chuck Russell, a great filmmaker, Brenda Fricker, an incredible director or incredible actress, um, Hal Williams, uh, uh, the police officer from Sanford and Son, uh, Smitty from Sanford and Son passed away.

The great Sam Neill, um, died.

he is in The Commitments.

Yeah.

And I never knew that was hi- What, you know, it's like I'd known The Commitments, and then I saw, um, Once, and it was-

... maybe a year or two later that I found out that that was the [laughs] same guy who's in The Commitments.

Yeah.

I remember it being a big deal because, like, people thought, people had written articles, or, on the sites that, like, he was, this was a continuation of his character from The Commitments.
