The Deadpool, whenever we see the clip of director Peter Swann's movie, it's Phantasm.

I think a nightmare on Elm Street is definitely Phantasm as well as Troll 2.

But the subgenre really kicks off in 1980 with the box office success of Encounters of the Spooky Kind and Hex.

And then the subgenre really took off with films like Bewitched, Hell Has No Boundary, Ghost Nursing, The Black Magic with Buddha, Devil Fetus and its sequel, The Boxer's Omen, Seeding of a Ghost, Red Spell Spells Red, The Seventh Curse, and the two sequels to Hex titled Hex vs. Witchcraft and Hex After Hex.

And I am only naming the most notable entries from Hong Kong and the only ones that came out before the category 3 rating was even introduced in 1988.

Because these films would only get more over the top in the 90s with entries like Beauty Evil Rose, Devil of Rape, Wizard's Curse, Eternal Evil of Asia, and Devil's Woman.

Yeah, it's very typical of these movies.

Very rarely is the Taoist priest really like... built up as a strong character.

Besides like, like the Boxer's Omen, where that film is about the main character becoming a monk and fighting evil.

Most of the time, they're just like a plot element.
