The Between

I should have it memorized.

And let me tell you, I had my first novel, The Between, written nine months later.

After that conversation.

Shit, whatever blinders I had on, whatever shackles I was wearing, I was free.

My literary heroines were writing about rural Black life in a way I could not [laughs] because I had not had that experience.

But darn it, I'm gonna write about a family in the suburbs [laughs] and it's going to be a horror novel.

And that's what my first novel, The Between, was.

And that was the first thing I ever sold.
