So at the end of the day, I think really the approach, once Dakota was playing that character, was to give her... a lot of runway to own it i kind of you know threw in some elements of people that i knew to flesh it out initially but then also the whole the whole point of making a movie and not a documentary is to mix it up a little bit you know pull it away from real life and so she had awesome ideas of her own and then also was very like forthcoming in our early meetings with her own dating life and her own relationship history and things like that so it kind of all went in the blender and then also going to alaska you just have certain character traits that come out of place and location like i was reading about alaska having the highest percentage of female construction workers of any state and I was like oh cool like that that's an interesting job let's like maybe try and throw that in there and the way she dresses and who she hangs out with and their social activities and all of that is you know also an attempt to try and get the place feeling right you know the location feeling right so but yeah she's the center and backbone of the movie from the very very beginning you know this idea of this character having to kind of balance these two relationships where she really does love both of these guys and has, you know, deep, deep feelings and confusion about both of those relationships.

And also, you know, neither is quite right or they both have their issues, you know?

All right, let's look at some numbers real quick We got programs with multiple nominations to most nominations.

We have the pit with 1225 total but 12 major and we only talked about the major ones here so 12 major nominations hacks and widows Bay tie with seven majors and pluribus with six and um and we got the networks here hbo hbo max with 35 of the major nominations netflix all right apple tv's second with the majors at 29 and netflix is third with with 16. um and then i did see we have some some changes just like you talked about before sexy outstanding scripted variety series and standing talk series were merged into outstanding variety series And also, we have five categories moved to the creative arts ceremonies preceding the weekend before.

We have outstanding, supporting actors, supporting actresses, and directing and writing for a limited or anthology series or movie were all moved to the creative arts categories.

What do you guys think about that? I don't know if I'm a big fan of that.

I mean, they should get their flowers on the main stage.

It just seems nonsensical.

All right.

So I found the creative arts page with the nomination.

So we'll have Mulder and Scully and Chris Carter and alien abductions and black oil and government conspiracies and the cigarette smoking man and the truth somewhere out there.

going to get all of it but before we do i just want to talk about the emmy awards because and this is interesting they actually have something to say about aliens but before we get to that just to set the table the creative arts awards this year are september 5th and 6th and the big prime time telecast is september 14th that's on nbc so depending on when you're listening to this they may be ahead of you or behind you but they're nearby I also just want to point out that I have a personal relationship to the Emmys that goes back a long way.

In 1997, back when Dark Skies was being canceled by NBC and they went off the air, I also got elected to be governor of the Television Academy.

And four years later, in 2001, I was elected chairman and CEO.

If I'm not mistaken, you and Jackie have been to the Creative Arts and the Primetime Awards every year.

I cannot think of a time that you broke that streak.

I'm talking with TCM host and noir expert Eddie Muller about this year's Noir City Festival, which comes to Chicago this week.

And today we're going to be talking slightly away from the normal regions that this podcast covers.

And we're turning to England, where we're going to be looking at the arts and England's early relations with the Islamic world.

And this is part of the Barakat Trust's podcast series this year titled Peripheries, where we're examining the relation between the regions normally considered the central lands of the Islamic world, and peripheral regions that aren't normally considered when we think about the term Islamic art or the Islamic world and so hence why we're in England.

And Jerry seems the perfect person to talk on this topic with us and I should briefly introduce him.

We've mentioned a bit about...

You've spoken about Elizabeth being in a position of inferiority.

What was this ambassadorship all about? And later we'll move on to the arts and the poetry that came out about it.

It's such an amazing story.

And I ask because here in Australia recently we've had three musicals shut prematurely in the last year, which is causing a bit of a spin.

And I wonder how supportive you think governments and philanthropists should be for protecting the arts and and how much should be left to market forces?

That's interesting.

Well, I have to say London is doing pretty well theatre-wise.

And, you know, we're lucky enough to have, you know, subsidised theatre, which has to be, of course... you know, added on to with the very generous philanthropists.

And, you know, the governments, you know, we've always battled for money.

The arts are always down the list.

Of course, you know, you're not going to get rid of your health service as opposed to the arts.
