The Art of Drowning

And, and as a person who got into this band f- uh, on The Art of Drowning, this is the song that I was the most drawn to initially from, from this record.

Um, just because like it, it's so melodic compared to everything else on here.

Uh, we have that like...

It had the huge track Music, which hit number one, and also the follow-up single Don't Tell Me.

In 2000 as well, AFI released The Art of Drowning.

This was their fifth studio album, and it did pretty well on the independent charts.

It hit number 174 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, though.

So not, not unsu- Or you might not be surprised to learn that this is a band that Kyle introduced me to.

Um, we both got into them around the Out of, or the Art of Drowning era, so like 2001, 2002-ish.

Um, and then like kind of went back from there.

Uh, we, uh, in our old band with our friend Matt, uh, covered Rizzo in the Box, uh, so I've listened to this album quite a bit.

Um, at least, you know, in the first, you know, four or so records.

Um, like, you know, th- this is a thing where like I...

Since I was always looking at this in retrospect because I started at Art of Drowning, like I, I see some through lines that like I, I don't think like necessarily would've been picked out at the time by any means.

Yeah.

Born in a Burial Ground by Cradle of Filth, which I was like, oh, my God, what the hell is this? And the Days of the Phoenix by FI.

And so one of the albums I went up and got the back of that was The Art of Drowning.

And I just instantly fell in love with it.

with the band after that.

So I'm not just picking this because it is the album that happened to introduce me to AFI.

I just think it genuinely fits the criteria really well.

But I would actually go with The Art of Drowning.

Yeah but then you're mentioning a couple songs there Where I have taken the role During the week that AFI were in the UK Where every day when they played a new show I would get the setlist FM up And I would update my little I've essentially created almost like a spreadsheet Where I can tell you now looking exactly at this What songs were played on what nights Compared to what was swapped out Elsewhere So I think one of the earlier Swapping points is They clearly had a slot where they were throwing in An old fast punk song From the kind of late 90s To dawn of the millennium Era I believe that both of you in London and Glasgow got a single second in that slot.

We, in Manchester, got Sacrifice Theory from The Art of Drowning.

And then I can also tell you that in Birmingham, they got Ever and a Day, another Art of Drowning deep cut.

And in Bristol, they got Wester, another fucking brilliant Art of Drowning deep cut.

That slot in yours, you got The Motherfucking Lost Souls.

The opening song, notwithstanding the intro track, from The Art of Drowning.

It's one of my two, I would say, probable favourite AFI songs.
