The Art Assignment

Um, and just kind of doing it.

I, I think about, um, I'm in a, uh, uh, a Discord channel where people are doing like Reconstructionist Slavic paganism, and there's some people who are really into it.

Um, and granted, like these are people who are like Czech and like living there, right?

Yeah.

Have always lived there.

And like this is just like, "We're, we're rediscovering our culture," sort of thing.

Um, and somebody, clearly one of the few Americans in the channel, was like, "How do you guys read so much of this stuff? Like, I get kind of bored." And in true Slavic fashion one of them was like, "If you're interested in it, how can reading about it be boring for you?" Um, and, uh, as I get older, realizing that there are things that excite me that like, uh, only excite me so far, right? Um, where, uh, I've read some artist biographies too, right? I, I read the lives of the Surrealists.

Like, the first visual artist who really captured my imagination was Salvador Dali.

Hi, my name's Mark Olsen, and I direct The Art Assignment and Mental Floss.

I'm a curator, an art educator, and I've spent my career seeking out ways to make learning about art more accessible, less pretentious, and actually relevant to life today.

I've worked in museums, written books, and developed the YouTube series The Art Assignment, all in an effort to continue my own art education and spark new conversations about art.

And this is Crash Course Art History.

In 22 episodes, we'll explore the who, where, when, and why of a wide range of artworks, unlocking secrets of the past that help us see the present in a whole new way.
