The Analects

The immeasurable influence in after-ages of the character thus portrayed proves how lofty was his own standard, and the national conscience has ever since assented to the justice of the portrait.

Next in order flow the Analects of Confucius, written by his disciples to chronicle the utterances of their most holy ancient teacher.

Confucius lived B.C. 551-478, and was thus contemporary with Daniel and Ezra.

Of many notable sayings recorded in this book, none is more widely known than the golden rule he impressed upon his followers.

So in public, they actually would write those poems that look very much like before, oh, you know, kind of great empire, great court and so on.

But now we can talk about in private, you can see they were writing the kind of poems that are so depressed, gloomy, and sad, and, you know, resentful about the new regime, you know, and you can, you know, and it's a very emblematic line is that, you know, you know, in Analects, you know, Confucius, you know, kind of, there was a famous saying that is, you know, all men within the four seas are brothers.

So there was a poet in the early 7th century in the Sui, and he wrote a line in one of his poems, and he said, all men within the four seas are strangers.

So this sense of alienation, devastation, trauma, PTSD, all this, so that kind of continued.

Courage was scarcely deemed worthy to be counted among virtues unless it was exercised in the cause of righteousness.

In his Analects, Confucius defines courage by explaining, as is often his want, what its negative is.

Quote, Perceiving what is right, he says, and doing it not argues lack of courage.

End quote.

That's one very rich group of sources.

There are sources that weren't necessarily produced by the masters, but within sort of the same... literary milieu that produced the masters that contain kind of historical anecdotes like the Zhang Wuzi or the Zuo Juan.
