didn't die because he's not real there's a perfect analog to this in my mind because In the His Dark Materials book, spoiler for a 30-year-old book, but at the end of The Amber Spyglass, Will and Lyra are separated by having to go into their separate universes, return to the universes from whence they came, and their burgeoning adolescent love gets cut off.
