Johnny Stanton IVGUEST

So I think what really made me fall in love with it was, as I mentioned, like getting to run for my friends and teammates.
Johnny Stanton IVGUEST

From that original group that I was playing in, I learned about the Adventure Zone, which is what really unlocked everything for me as like D&D as a narrative, which I'm sure it did for a lot of people, which is fun now because now I can consider a couple of the McElroy members family there.
Johnny Stanton IVGUEST

I'm in a fantasy football leagues with a couple of them and they're really good folks.
Johnny Stanton IVGUEST

But that is what I think inspired me to run my own game, which is basically a reskinned version of the video game nature that Griffin ran for the Adventure Zone that I tried to use as the core conceit for my own game, which really we got less than 10 sessions in.
Johnny Stanton IVGUEST
6:04
It went the way that most D&D campaigns go, and it just fell apart when we moved away from each other.
Johnny Stanton IVGUEST
6:10
But the Adventure Zone was the basis for what I ran that first campaign on in terms of like having a set of MacGuffins.
Johnny Stanton IVGUEST
6:17
I kind of I think I like set all of the MacGuffins to be surrounding the alignment chart, which I thought was kind of cool.

Like there was a different crystal that was supposed to represent each like lawfulness, chaos, good and evil.

where you have to deal with a five-year-old constantly being like no no and I saved the day again with magic yeah and um after that like I don't know I played a lot of Magic the Gathering with my dad growing up and I was aware of D&D through him but I didn't actually play it until I had like a few bad experiences like trying to join random games and the first real game i played was like a group of friends who were like all cool and queer and they said like come play i said can i play dnd with you can i join and they were like i don't know and they said well first you need to know the rules and i was so broke i'm like i can't afford one of them books and they said don't worry just go listen to the adventure zone and Which is a wild podcast to suggest for learning the rules of Dungeons and Dragons.
Anne MonteverdiGUEST
17:16
But completely, I was like, I guess that's just how you play D&D.
Anne MonteverdiGUEST
17:20
I didn't know there were like
Anne MonteverdiGUEST

I don't have enough spare time to do this, to devote a day of the week to this, but you can have one of my stream days if it's good content.

ZachGUEST
35:14
you know and so that has been our mindset the entire time none of us expected honestly none of us expected to finish season one as far as the podcast goes like we were a gaming group for a couple years before we started recording we'd run two 10-month-long Delta Green campaigns with some one-shots in between them to keep us going every Tuesday night around my kitchen table.
ZachGUEST
35:40
And when we decided to start recording it, it was half because I was obsessed with nerd poker and the Adventure Zone and Glass Cannon podcast and thought... fuck it i i want to do that like i used to uh be an audio engineer for bands okay music and uh then like justin and i were in a band together so the mics that we used early on were the mics from our like garage i have to guess
EvanHOST
36:11
zach you're a bassist
ZachGUEST

originally absolutely yeah
Morgan GlennonHOST

Morgan GlennonHOST

Uh, but there was a podcast, uh, with a bunch of like comedians called the adventure zone, uh, that they would put out like hour long episodes.
Morgan GlennonHOST
5:40
And like, it was them, uh, at least the first season was them kind of like learning to play D and D.
Morgan GlennonHOST
5:45
So for me, it was like more, uh, understandable and kind of like more accessible.
Rebecca JohnsonHOST

It's almost kind of like listening to a Dungeons and Dragons type thing with role-playing.
JimHOST

It's sort of along that line, but a little bit different.
