Now, Watson tells Caveview that he thinks the district is worth protecting from state intervention.

And he sees that this may be the only avenue to make that happen.

Save the district, close the schools.

Listen, Austin's mayor is calling on parents at Burnett and Webb Middle Schools to petition for the closure of their campuses.

Well, after receiving five consecutive F grades from the Texas Education Agency, Bernitz and Webb are now putting the entire district at risk of a total state takeover.

But Mayor Kirk Watson, he's got a solution in mind.

He tells CBS Austin that parents can push for those schools to be closed, which would then potentially prevent the Texas Education Agency from clearing out the school board and replacing it with a state board approved managers.

What I'm proposing is that we utilize a part of that statute that says if the parents petition the commissioner to close the schools, then that limits it to that, to the closure of the schools and not to take over the entire district.

Two elementary schools and Conroe Virtual School received D ratings, while two other campuses received F ratings.

Now, the rest of today's headlines.

So the judge has tossed a lawsuit over state investigations into Texas teachers' post about Charlie Kirk.

You had the Texas governor, Greg Abbott, who announced that the Texas Education Agency, T is what it goes by, they began investigations into teachers who cheered Kirk's murder and potentially incited additional violence online.

So in a strongly worded letter to superintendents, T Commissioner Mike Moras condemned the educators' despicable behavior, noting that such conduct may constitute violations of the educators' code of ethics.

so they started investigating it and they're like we're looking at staff who have posted it or shared it and it's you know reprehensible the inappropriate content on social media about the assassination of charlie kirk i don't know anybody that would actually celebrate something like that but there were teachers that were doing it even So the state argued that the letter was not new policy, and they pointed to existing ethics rules.

The district is facing a $1.2 million deficit for the next fiscal year, and officials say that gap is also driven by lower enrollment.

According to the Texas Education Agency, Galveston ISD has lost over 300 students since 2018.

Beyond this school year, officials with both districts say that they'll look into reducing staff positions to help reduce costs.

Texas AFT argued that the letter chilled teacher speech and led to professional consequences, including flags on teacher certificates and Do Not Hire designations.

But US District Judge Alan Albright ruled that the union did not show its alleged harms were directly caused by Morath's letter.
