Tender Mercies

I have family everywhere, but mostly I grew up in San Antonio.

And I would watch films like, like Tender Mercies, Last Picture Show, Hud, Giant to a certain extent, very kind of Texas-flavored movies, and those really got under my skin.

I really love those movies, particularly Tender Mercies.

Like, all of Horton Foote's work I really gravitated toward.

And so I just started to try to m- as, as any writer kind of does, I think, when they're starting out, just try to mimic him and try to find where my own slant fits into that kind of style of writing.

Anyway, we picked a couple of movies that are substantial from his career.

The first one was Tender Mercies, which was released back in March of 1983.

Boy, I was young.

It starts Robert Duvall, Tess Harper, Betty Buckley, Wilford Brimley, and a very young Ellen Barkin.

Um, what's your experience with these flicks?

Uh, well, let's see.

I went into tender mercies, uncertain whether I had seen it before or not.

And by the end of it was pretty sure that I have seen it before, but it would have been a long, long time ago, clearly.

In 1984, he won Best Actor in a Leading Role.

I've never seen it, though, but it's a Western.

good.

And Tender Mercies, which I've never seen.

I've never heard of that.

It won Best Director, James Hellbrooks.

He's great.
