Temiskaming Shores

Now, internal records obtained by the CBC's The Fifth Estates Show show that the agency did not check the veracity of the returns and two weeks later began sending out the refunds in installments to Pierce's bank account, including a $10 million deposit on August 8th, 2023.

Now, Pierce, who is a longtime resident of Timiskaming Shores, which is 500 kilometers north of Toronto in northern Ontario, right on the border with Quebec, initially declined an interview.

But when Fifth Estate co-host Stephen D'Souza knocked on his door recently, Pierce said that he was as surprised as anyone when the millions landed in his personal bank account.

And he said that, quote, I thought the CRA would turn around and say, I'm sorry, sir, this doesn't work that way.

He says the agency is garnishing his wages, but three years later, he hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing.

The Fifth Estate's investigation, The Sovereign Swindle, airs tonight at 9:00 PM on CBC television and Gem, or watch it anytime on YouTube.

[laughs] There is a possibil- uh, sorry, a possibility that we played that driving home from New Liskeard one time, and you did weep in the car, but then you were like, "No, I just had a fly in my eye for an hour and a half."

Yeah.

So.
