Canada’s Health Care Crisis Has Reached a Dangerous New Level
C

There's also searches on how to find a walk-in clinic near you without a giant lineup out the door.
C

There's even more searches now in the last few months on virtual doctors looking at things like Maple and Telus Health.
C
1:06Chris BakerHOST
And increasingly, and more dangerously, when they can't get medical advice quickly enough, Canadians are googling something potentially much more consequential to your own health, and that is your symptoms.

Dr. Google.
8 MINS LATER

9:40Chris BakerHOST
Walk-in clinics near me, after-hours clinics open late.
C

And this is where Canada's supposedly simple healthcare system starts becoming a scavenger hunt for care.
C

Family doctor, walk-in clinic, urgent care, family ER center, virtual care, Telus Health.

I like the word rhythms on how I figured out
S
24:38Scotty BarrGUEST
... rhythms, sorry Um, even just coming out and, uh, you know, from, right from the get-go, we were realizing that we weren't getting enough support from our family doctor that we had at the time, and, and we loved our family doctor, but just the way that things were set up where it was, you know, a 10-minute appointment, you have to book about two minute, two weeks in advance, and, you know, if you can get an appointment, and you come in, and she's basically just saying, you know, leading the, the witness and saying, "What, what prescription do you need?" And it's like, "Well, I need a lot more than, than that." And so we knew at that point we needed to change things, and so we actually switched and went to a private clinic, uh, which then got folded into, which is now Telus Health, so they got bought out.

Um, so we go...
S

And it's not Telus Health, the, like, dial-up call-in that most people know.
S
25:29Scotty BarrGUEST
It's more like a full-scale clinic, so it has family doctor, it has a nurse, nurse practitioners, has medical assistants who fill out prescriptions.
S

So it's just, for somebody in my situation, it's been very worthwhile for us to get the immediate care when it's needed and for them to be very ingrained into our, our journey.

And so I went back to school, did my MBA at Western at the Ivy Business School, which ended me a role in Deloitte in organizational transformation.

I then shifted from like, human capital advisory into jumping into the strategy office at Telus Health, where it was all about the future of healthcare and guiding Telus through mergers, acquisitions in the digital health space.
J

And then I thought to myself, oh man, I'm 33.
J

I've crossed off all my bucket list items.
Season 4, Episode 3 | Why social media might be making you feel broke
R
2:59Rob CarrickGUEST
You know, I think one small step is all it takes to get started and you have to pick what it's going to be.
R

And I think the savings theme that we're talking about here is key because I was at a conference recently and someone from Telus Health got up and started talking about the stress everybody's feeling and what can be done to get people to feel less stress.
R
3:17Rob CarrickGUEST
And their research shows the number one thing is to have savings.

Sounds boring.

I just wanted to go back and finally to something you mentioned before, that people probably aren't aware of how much health care right now people are paying for.
J
32:32Jill BennettHOST
I know a lot of people who use TELUS Health and pay for scans and pay.
J
32:36Jill BennettHOST
for different things, people who pay for their own MRIs, people who find ways to purchase parts of the healthcare system.
J

But to your point, it is happening.
